02.11.2006 | "Honeymoon or can we survive without love?"
(Ñ) Ì. Tombak, 02 April 2007 ã. Published in Russian in "Kstatie" newspaper and online at HLAMS Author is a man? Director is a man? In spite of this you feel so comfortable as if you are with bunch of your girlfriends sitting on the couch drinking tea and munching on cookies. Lets cry and laugh at these impossible, snobby, egotistical and cheating male species. What, without them? Yes, without them...You better believe it. we can earn more then them and we raise children better. Nowadays we can get pregnant without their help. Strange. The phone is ringing. Who might it be? I am just going to listen for a second to find out who it is. Hello? Seems like a very female oriented play, but of course it is about them...about men. On stage there are women who are just like us the ones sitting in the audience. They are drinking tea, they are crying, they are feeling sorry for each other, they are getting angry and happy just like us.They are so tender, trusting and open with us. Only as one can be with close friends. These women are completely different: Linda(Yana Mayfield) is young, passionate, vivacious, a tad careless. How rapidly do these quirks disappear right in front of our eyes. Then there is her complete opposite- Dr. Kovalski( Marina Chechelnizkaya). She is of high morals, very proper and sweet. And last but not least-Barbara, who captures audiences with her emotional performance. All these characters go through a phase of transformation, realizing the meaning of love, and finding their place in this world. A trio of these three irresistible women would not be complete without appearance of men. Even though their appearance is very fleeting. And no matter how pretentious these women get, they realize that without men their lives would be mundane and uneventful. Director and actors found a right balance between laughter and sadness. Pauses are perfectly distributed through the play. Music and lighting help create a homey atmosphere. It was so fascinating to just walk around during intermission and listen to conversations about the play. "Everything is just like when I get together with girlfriends". "Not bad, not bad. Acting is on pretty high level. It is amazing they hold full time jobs on top of this"." That's right ! Soon we will not need men. We will learn how to make babies without them". "Wow, she is my doctor. And I had no idea she could act so well. How does she manage it all?" "Some professionals should take classes from them". i live in San Francisco. Rarely do I come to Peninsula. My friends recommended that I see this play. This is the second one that I have seen. So far I love it.I think it is a level that is not embarrassing to show from a big stage.I also learned that this theater was around for 10 years and that this play is a borderline between past and future. It used to be "Theater on the backyard" and now it became "Theater You".I believe "Theater You" has a bright future. (c) translated by Y.M. |
